"Operating Theater began when I came upon two boxes of vintage medical teaching slides in an antique store; they were x-rays that showed how to recognize disorders of the brain and lungs. They were grotesque, but I was instantly intrigued—initially, it felt voyeuristic to look at these intimate pictures of strangers’ bodies, but then I realized that even if you were the stranger whose body was on the slide you wouldn’t recognize that spinal cord, that lung as yourself. . . ."

Dear Friends,

Beginning this week, you can find me blogging over at The Constant Conversation, a new endeavor from the smart review site The Quarterly Conversation. In this new role, I hope to spend much of my time highlighting small presses and the great work they do for poetry, by reviewing chapbooks (an often overlooked but very revealing format in its small size--if poetry is the concision of prose, then the chapbook might be the poetry of the book . . . not sure about that analogy, but perhaps) and presenting interview profiles of small presses and journals. Through these profiles, I want to not only bring attention to the great work these presses do (often as a volunteer effort), but to open a larger conversation about the publishing industry today and its relationship to the book, which I think is very different for those presses devoted to poetry. That said, if you have recommendations for small presses that deserve some publicity and some chapbooks that deserve a further look, please send them my way--and read The Constant Conversation and become a part of the dialogue.

The Chicago Underground Library celebrates “The Science of Obscurity,” an evening of new, unpublished, and in-progress works presented as science fair experiments. I am excited to announce a new updatable, searchable Wiki for curated reading series and independent bookstores eager to host events throughout the country (and hopefully abroad). Myself, as both poet and poetry editor, I have been frustrated with the lack of an electronic resource or directory for finding such series and bookstores, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I invite and encourage you to update and add to this Wiki so that it can be the most current and comprehensive possible. It's still a bit rough, and I hope to further develop it with your help. I hope this information can be of great use to all of us in our travels, tours, and plot to take over the world with our words.

Drawing influence from such sources as Chris Marker, Anne Carson, and Pythagoras, "Pandora's Star Box" marries poetry and film. Structurally, it creates a dialog between the mediums of language and moving picture. This dialog is echoed thematically in a focus on the intersection of science and myth. Expect Pandora, an astronomer, sublime peaks, vast skies, and mystery.

Coming Soon: Around the Coyote

Look for the premiere of a multi-media poetry event during the upcoming Around the Coyote festival in Chicago's Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhood this October. I am working on a short (perhaps silent) film to accompany and compliment a new sequence of poems that are underway. I'll be shooting the film in the Scottish Highlands next month, so expect a Malick-like meditation on sublime landscape with a little bit of the Loch Ness Monster and Brakhage thrown-in. Needless to say, the finished product will surely surprise you and I both. So stay tuned.

A native of Staten Island, Carrie Olivia (Ferguson) Adams works in publishing in Chicago. She earned a BA in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Georgia and an MFA in Poetry from Vermont College.

She is a contributing editor to Hunger Mountain, and the poetry editor for Black Ocean, an independent press based out of Boston, New York, and Chicago.

She has published reviews in The Georgia Review, Quarterly West, and Verse. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Backwards City Review, Cranky, DIAGRAM, and Lilies and Cannonballs. In addition, she has published one chapbook, "A Useless Window," and her first full-length collection, Intervening Absence, is forthcoming from Ahsahta Press.
